Booklist - 03/01/2026 In this charming new series installment, little boogeymonster El Cucuy's first assignment is over and he is already scheming to get back to his best friend, Ramón. But when the contract between boogeymonsters and humans lapses, the boogeymonsters run amuck in the human world. El Cucuy returns to Ramón just as three of the worst monsters—the Ninki Nanka, the Butzemann, and Baba Yaga—crash the boy’s birthday party. The friends will have to think on their feet to stop the monsters from eating the guests. Moving quickly from one problem to the next, Higuera balances fears both human and monster with humor, viewing rituals like piñatas and birthday candles through the eyes of a boogeymonster. Perdomo’s beautiful folklore-inspired illustrations in shades of green and black pop as they wrap around the text, giving readers a glimpse at the monsters of the world.
