Only weeks ago, Avery pulled her best friend, Key, from the deadly black water. The cycle from her family's Kanyenkehaka (Mohawk) stories is finally broken, the black water is now a harmless lake, and her problems are far from supernatural: All Avery wants is a normal summer with Key, her now-boyfriend. The trauma, however, casts a long shadow over the town. Some victims never returned. Sequel to The Unfinished.

Booklist - 09/01/2025 Following the events of The Unfinished (2024), Avery is ready for the perfect summer. She saved Key, her best friend turned boyfriend, from the black water and stripped it of its power. Avery and her mom have reconnected with their estranged Kanyen’kehá:ka (Mohawk) family, and even her absent dad has started making amends. Yet there is a wrinkle disturbing Avery’s bubble of happiness. Sometimes Key seems off: staring into space, forgetting basic details, swinging from mean to attentive. Everyone assumes he’s suffering lingering trauma, but Avery’s witnessed odd behavior from others zoning out around the village fountain that’s suddenly bubbling after decades of dryness. Her own reflection has been worrying her, too, like she’s seeing someone else on the other side. Avery learns more about the lore of the black water and her Kanyen’kehá:ka family’s ancestral connection to it in this thrilling sequel, which delves into a dark mirror world of supernatural threats that spur Avery to connect with her true self and trust her friends and family in new ways. Scary and satisfying. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
